Kimo’s first home: the rusted out trunk of a car. Can you see how ridiculously thick that chain is? And look at his swollen paws with toenails so long he couldn’t even walk!
Imagine you’re in Vegas and the odds at the game you’re playing are 1:2. Those are great odds if you’re at the roulette wheel or the craps table. But imagine you’re a dog in a Los Angeles County animal shelter: those are the odds you’ll make it out alive.
Take the case of Kimo. Kimo came to A Passion for Paws Rescue, Inc. through the care and concern of an individual in Los Angeles. Kimo’s owner had wanted a guard dog for his junk yard (Akitas are known for their fierce loyalty and protective nature). Unfortunately, Kimo’s owner thought that Kimo wasn’t ferocious enough, so he began starving Kimo, in an attempt to make him more vicious. In addition to starvation, Kimo’s owner chained him so close to a wall outside the warehouse that Kimo was forced to lie in puddles of dank, cold water for days at a time. Kimo’s only protection from the elements was a rusted out car trunk.

Kimo’s impound photo. He’s filthy and almost furless. Who would want a dog that looks like this?
Kimo survived because his dognapper notified A Passion for Paws Rescue, Inc. Cheryl Weatherford, founder of A Passion for Paws Rescue, Inc., nursed Kimo back to life using over $1,000 of her own personal funds. When rescued, Kimo weighed less than 80 pounds, had three different parasites, couldn’t walk because his toenails were so long, and had lost huge amounts of fur due to malnutrition and stressful living conditions. Kimo is now in his forever home in Glendale, California. He is a happy, healthy, loving dog who weighs in at an impressive 120 pounds, and is not a bit overweight!
A Passion for Paws Rescue, Inc. exists solely on donations and they need your help in order to save more Akitas and other large breed types from an otherwise almost certain fate. Shelters often insist that we retrieve a dog within 24 hours. Finding a foster home in 24 hours is nearly impossible. We can board dogs; however, boarding runs $10 to $20 a day, and without your help, we cannot possibly hope to board all the Akitas the local shelters thrust upon us. Please consider donating one month or even one week’s boarding for one of these gentle giants. For only $10 a day, you can change not only a dog’s life, but the receiving family who will always treasure their four-legged family member.
